THE BIG BANG THEORY OF DANCE WITH MIRCEA ECXARCU

People who experience dance as a feeling every single day from their life have different approach when it comes about teaching and learning the A-B of dance. One is sure music is the fuel. It tells you how to move, when to move, and what to express through movement.

The Bulgarian dance community had recently the opportunity to exchange knowledge with one of the most popular dancers from our neighboring country Romania – Mircea Ecxarcu. He shared with us his theory of dance and provoked the dancing people in Bulgaria to go deep in their feelings while dancing and listening to music.

You are about to discover how Mircea explains his connection with music and dance and what had he realized during his journey of self-expression as a dancer…

just continue reading…

Who’s Mircea?

I prefer being myself than talking about myself. But if I have to say something about me than I am Mircea, I live in Bucharest, and my passion is dance. Dance as an expression not a movement or mechanics. For me talking about myself is so useless. Let’s just enjoy ourselves and be ourselves! Anybody will get to know and feel me not because I will give him an explanation of myself but because I will be really present there.

How did you meet Halifix Crew and decided to come to Bulgaria for a workshop?

I met Halifix year and a half ago at SDK Romania 2013. I liked their energy and the fact that they didn’t want so much to do it to get somewhere but for the dance itself whatever dance was meaning for them back then. So, I got to know them better and talked to Mohata to come here and just train with them. I am here not for the workshops, I am here for the whole experience of understanding together what dance is.

Have you made other workshops outside Romania?

I did some in Poland but I do workshops mostly in Romania. You see I’m not that meeting kind of guy. If I see the match and I feel it then I do it but I am in this for it not for getting somewhere.

You are coming from Romania. Tell us how did the hip hop scene there develop. Do you remember the dawn of street dance in Romania?

Basically we did a lot of crap. At least I felt that it was crap. Luckily I had the chance to meet face to face with real dance. This was the moment when I felt that dance will be my kind of self-expression and started discovering it for myself. Then I started building the basis of the real hip hop community in Bucharest. Before this there were some kind of competitions like imitate your favorite artist or the so called MTV dance. This was like almost 6 and a half years ago and I started to train a few people and then a few more and that’s how the community has grown.

And how did you start dancing?

I started doing some stuff at the age of 18 and then at 20 I met real dance and that’s when I started doing the real thing. The first time I met the real dance was at SDK Europe. There were people who were actually dancing and feeling. It was totally different from what I knew but so close to what I felt and boom that was the perfect match.

How did you discover SDK?

I actually judged an online competition in Romania and me as a judge and the winner both went to SDK.

You’ve been a judge and a true competitor in battles. What is the key for staying cool in a battle according to you?

Key in everything to stay cool is be focused only on the music and the dance and don’t be focused on that voice in your head that keeps telling you – Do this, do that. So, it doesn’t matter where you are. When you dance, you dance. You should only be in that and be focused within that. So there should be no pressure cause you are not looking for something, you are just dancing.

And what is your training routine? How much do you spent in training?

I dance every day but training is not supposed to be just training mechanics of the body. You have to feel stuff within you, connect to the music within you, go deeper and deeper. There is a lot to tell here but connect with the music every day and even if you practice mechanics, practice them as a connection with the music not just as movement. When it comes about time - I am not the guy who goes on schedule cause I think it shouldn’t be forced. It should be present and aware of where you are and what you feel. But if I’m obliged to say, I practice between 2-3 hours a day and separated from this comes the self-discovery. This helps me feel more and be able to be more efficient. It’s like being able to connect to the seed of a tree, not just try to copy some leaves from the tree.

In this regard do you practice meditation techniques?

My life is not of a dancer, it is of a person who is doing his best to be himself and my expression takes the form of dancing. I believe that the activity of meditation doesn’t exist, but connecting to different frequencies of life is another thing. We do it by different mechanics and meditation is one of them. The mechanics could be anything from no movement to dancing or even walking.

You love the music that makes you do popping. Are there popping dancers who you admire?

It’s not about respecting dancers, it’s about the dance and being thankful and appreciating dance and being joyful whenever you meet someone who really dances. I like in house – Yugson, in popping I like Nelson, Kite, Hozin, Hoan. I like Joseph Go very much.

Which is the track you are listening to most lately?

I don’t keep track of the songs I listen to. But my explanation of the favorite song phenomenon is this - each song is like a wave with different frequencies and when you dance and listen to music you connect to one of these frequencies. If in one moment in time your phase of being is open to certain frequencies and you suddenly hear to music with the same frequencies you immediately feel that you want to hear it again and again.

And how did you understand this?

Well my life is living and connecting to life and if you manage to connect properly, life tells you everything you want to know. But you don’t care about the telling, you care about the living. Like in dance if you are able to dance, you don’t care about the knowing, even if you know it but if you are not able to dance, then you need something, you need to gather knowledge. So any person who actually dances he will enjoy and care about the dance not the things that he knows about dance. In life is the same. You don’t care about all the information that you have. If you live, you care about living.

What’s your opinion about the Bulgarian dancers and their feel of music?

They want the right stuff but there is too much information which is about dance and not about dancing. It’s very easy to get the wrong information. That’s why you shouldn’t make your choice based on the information that you get, but based on the dance that you see and feel. It’s like have you ever seen a 50-year-old man who dances even though he doesn’t know the steps and his dance is more dancing than that of many people who claim to be dancers.

What would you scream out loud if you had a loudspeaker?

I would go among a crowd and I won’t say anything cause if people listen to nothing may be at some time they will start hearing something and most of all start feeling something. Cause if I give you noise, you will never hear anything underneath the noise. But if you are attentive to silence, you will start hearing stuff.

I have to say that after this philosophical talk I was left with no words. I just needed to experience everything that Mircea said by myself. And I truly believe that everybody who was present at the discussion and the workshops afterwards felt the same way.

I'd really like to say a big THANK YOU to Atanas Kutsev who made those truly professional photos. You could find more beauty coming from his camera here:

I'd also like to thank Dimitar Zhelev and Halifix Crew for the support and the enthusiasm with which they accepted my idea for this interview. Thank you!

ДА ВДИГНЕШ BATTLE ОТ ЛЕЖАНКА – URBAN ALL STYLE BATTLE

The Loudspeakr!

KEEP DANCING AND KEEP SPREADING THE TRUE KNOWLEDGE!!!

The Russian Street Dance Scene Represented by Matryoshki in JAZZ

I was browsing youtube in a search for a fresh new dance inspiration when I encountered Alesya. You know that moment when you find something interesting and you immediately start digging to learn everything possible about your treasure. The same happened to me. I fell in love with Alesya and her crew Matryoshki in Jazz. They come from Russia and will make your mind go crazy. They are real house dance divas. Here is what Alesya told me about the Russian street dance scene, their crew, and this year’s HOUSE DANCE FOREVER.

I've been dancing since 2005. I think we were almost the first generation of street dancers with right understanding of all this top styles: house, hip hop, funk styles! Access to the internet became easier, people started to travel more and we got more and more information from Europe and the USA. We were watching videos from Juste Debout Paris and inspired by this we were trying to feel it while practicing and developing our own style!

Now it is 2013 and I can surely say that I am proud of the dance scene in Russia. Our country is so huge, you can imagine it, but even in the remotest regions there are people with bright eyes learning street dance culture! I noticed it traveling a lot in my country! We got very good level in Siberia, in the south of Russia, in Saint-Petersburg, and surely in Moscow where I live right now! We are young but very hardworking and dedicated! Here in Moscow I am surrounded by very original dancers with their own style and deep understanding of dance culture and the whole life at all! And I am really inspired by this!!

But in my opinion one problem among dancers is the lack of so-called inner groove! People practice a lot, spend so much time in dance classes, learn a lot of moves, take part in the battles! It's all good. But sometimes they cannot just chill and groove with music, just enjoying the moment of connection between your body and the music rhyme, just grooving, just interacting with other people on the dance floor in da club, just feeling the freedom! That's what I think!

I started with hip hop, in that time we called it "new style". It was approx 2006. But after visiting one hip hop workshop I decided to stay for house! It turned out it was rather easy for me to understand the whole groove of this dance style. I started practicing it, but the main impact for developing was watching Brooklyn Terry DVD! I fell in love with footwork and still with it! I like the clearness of my steps, I like experimenting with my steps, reflecting all levels of music with my feet! I am inspired by tap dance, lindy hop, swing dancers, broadway jazz, and the underground jazz movement of UK called Jazz Fusion. I want to tell you some more about my last passion. Jazz dance or Fusion Jazz or BeBop is a dance movement that originated in the UK in the 1970s. "The style grew up in clubs in the UK, mainly in London and in northern cities, to the sounds of bebop, Afro-Cuban jazz, fusion, swing and other Latin-influenced jazz and funk."

The Interest towards this style and towards the whole jazz with its own special aesthetic this is what gathered 4 girls in one crew, called Matryoshki in jazz. It consists of me, Snow, Mari and Lea. Matryoshka is a national russian doll containing other smaller dolls inside. We use it like a symbol of our nationality, roots and heritage , it’s like a symbol of our individualities that reflects the way we live, our lifestyle.

We dance house mostly, locking, hip hop, breaking, and jazz.
We are trying to be active as much as it is possible!!!
We do different shows

We take part in battles

We travel

We organize weekly events- Footwork House Jam.
We collaborate with DJs, musicians, fashion designers, another crews. For example this summer in Amsterdam on the event SummerDanceForever we performed with Fusion All Stars. This show was like an exchange between 2 generations, it was unforgettable incredible moment!))))))

We also write a blog. Check this out. There are a lot of interesting stuff about the lifestyle of dancers. http://matryoshkiinjazz.tumblr.com/

We are always open for various interesting projects!
What I want to add  more is that we are not only members of the same dance project, but we are spiritual sisters, and when we are together it's a bomb of energy, beauty and clearness))))

So…what can I say about the event HouseDanceForever! I think it's the best! At least for me! I have been their 3 times and every time my body, my soul, my mind are inspired by the house movement! The whole atmosphere, the people, the circles, the MUSIC, the level of dancers! If you really love house, don't miss it!

Stay tuned!!!

Mufasa: The Female Hip Hop "Beast"

Mufasa was born in Drancy, a commune in the northeastern suburbs of Paris.  Music and dance have occupied her whole existence. When she was a little girl her dad was often listening to Bob Marley and “Lambada”. She remembers dancing in front of the TV for hours. Her mother, Dolores, had noticed that and immediately signed her to dance classes – ballet as a start.  But Mufasa had that boyish character. She even practiced football for a while. Her father was frequently out of home and her mom was forced to cope with everything - she worked at Carrefour and was a mother of 3 kids. Dolores was a super woman. At the age of 13 Mufasa and her family moved to Antibes, a resort town in the Alpes-Maritimes. There she discovered the beach, the sun, and Angelo di Monaco, doctor in modern jazz and her mentor. Since then dance is not just a hobby for Mufasa, it became a profession. Angelo taught her how to make a parallel between dance and real life, helped her to grow up. It was dance that improved her living. But dancing wasn’t possible without a diploma. So, Sandrine graduated in Communication and later in Social and Economic Administration. She even worked in an office where she found that staying for 8 to 10 hours behind a desk wasn’t for her. Mufasa had to decide whether she will continue that miserable living or will start a new being dedicated to the dance. Risk has always been a part of her existence. It can be seen even in her dance. One thing is clear Mufasa lives her dream.

This is a short story from “The Red Bulletin” magazine that Mufasa shared with me. When I asked her for that interview I wasn’t even thinking that she might answer. Well, she replied to my message and was really pleased to hear that Bulgaria loves her. Here is my personal conversation with Sandrine L. aka Mufasa – the female beast on the international hip hop scene.

How have you started?

I spent my early years in classical and modern ballet near Paris.  Later, I discovered hip hop, taking dance lessons in between my studies at the University in Nice in south of France.  After graduation, I first worked for an African company in Nice. I progressed through my first professional experiences and joined a hip hop company called  ”A New Step Ahead“, then “Bakhus” formerly called "Artefakt", as well as performing on stage at the Opera of Limoges and Montpellier.

Now you are famous in the hip hop community all over the world. Do you remember what was the feeling during your first battle?

HUNGRY !!!!!!!! And scared at the same time =]

And how did you find your stage name MUFASA?

It’s  really personal. The past experiences and the nostalgia made me choose this name.  For most of the people - it’s about my hair and my lion strength. It suits me.

You are part of EGOTRIP. How did you get together?

Egotrip' is a family made up of friends. Lili Puce, Africaris, Yvi, Pims, and me - we are all dancers, but friends  first . Our union has been always shinning. That’s why we decided to put a name on this! Egotrip comes from “egaux”. In French this means “equal “. We are on the same way. Although some people think it’s a form of egotrippin’, we also perceive it as a way to play with hip hop egos scornfully.

Our crew has so much love. We want to share things and support each other. Without them I did nothing! They represent strength and comfort, respect and crazy simplicity. This is all that I love about them. We have our proper vocabulary and at the same time we are all different: bboys, hip hop dancers, salsa dancers, modern jazz dancers, African dancers, etc. EVERYONE is open minded and that’s what makes our strength grow.

A few months ago everybody was talking about that battle with Lil’ Beast from Les Twins. How did you feel when you won that battle?

As always =] Make the moment something different. Let body talk. Feel the music, find his energy, and make a symbiosis. Play with the opponent and all good things will come from IMPROVISATION.

I have noticed that you are always walking around during a battle? What for?

Because I can’t wait to dance.

You dance with such an energy and feeling. What inspires you?

An inspiration could be a person, a color, music, imagination, memories, emotions. My energy changes all the time. I try to listen to what’s happening inside me and release it through my body. Most of the time music makes it all.

Music. Yeah, Music. What are your favorite tracks that make you groove?

I don't like the word "favorite ".  I think in everything you can find something good and strong. It depends on your state of mind. I mean I can’t tell you my favorite track, it changes every minute, every second. If you wanna know my favorite track at this very moment:  It’s Oumou Sangaré –Mali.

You are a part of the STANDARDS project of Pierre Rigal. Where have you met him and how have you decided to participate in it?

I met Pierre Rigal during a casting. He was looking for dancers and me for work. We both found what we wanted. I find his work really interesting and I am always surprised of his talent.

And as we talk about projects could you tell us more about "The 7th Element"?

“The 7th Element” is a meeting between 6 artists. Meech told me about his idea to create a new show. I liked the team and his spirit, so we started connecting our inspirations under Meech’s directions. I really enjoyed the first part of the creation, now waiting for the next step.

You were in Bulgaria a few months ago for Sofia Dance Week. What are your memories from Sofia?

Sofia: soon!!!
I remember people smiling, good food, positive energy, great moments with Pierre Rigal’s team, and happy meetings with dancers there - I’m dedicated to them!!!

And what is your next station?

TOKYO

What would you scream out loud if you had a loudspeaker?

I would scream just if your loudspeaker was magical and realised wishes.

For this article I would like to thank first of all MUFASA for her support and her frank answers. I would also like to thank Gerry who helped me a lot with the translation from French.

Stay tuned!!!

Underground Dance Battle?

Stay tuned !!!
